Although Celiac Awareness Month (May) is almost over, there is still time to celebrate living a full and fulfilling gluten-free life with a trip to a gluten-free dining destination. However, traveling isn’t always easy when you have a food allergy or dietary restriction. Calling up each hotel, restaurant, and food vendor to discuss options can seem like an incredibly daunting task.

While traveling, it may be best to plan ahead and go to a resort or destination that can accommodate gluten-free diners, taking the guess work out of where to go and what to eat. Cruising has become a great way for travelers to leave their gluten-free worries behind once they board the ship, because guests can request the special gluten-free menu ahead of time. Throughout the entire adventure, the waitstaff will be able to provide cruisers with the best, tastiest options available to them. Royal Caribbean recently revamped its gluten-free program with a host of new dishes created by a nutritionist to also make them heart-healthy and waistline-friendly.

Another option is to plan a trip to a boutique hotel that is known for catering to gluten-free diners. Hotels like the Acanto Hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico as well as the Westin in Aruba have a variety of options to serve to guests, along with helpful and knowledgeable restaurant staff that can explain all of the menu options.

In New York City, Classic Harbor Line Boat Tours offer gluten-free buffets along with their many different cruise options, including the AIA Architecture Tour, Wine Tastings, and a Morimoto Sunset Sushi dinner cruise.

Finally, for an overall gluten-free destination, Sin City has become a beacon of light. Not only have major casino hotels like the Bellagio and the Wynn and Encore become gluten-free-friendly, there are a plethora of other restaurants and dining destinations along the Strip that now offer the same.

Going gluten free is no longer just a trendy thing to do. With more awareness around gluten intolerance and celiac disease, adopting a gluten-free diet has become so widespread, most likely you or someone you know is doing it, has tried it, does it sometimes, or all of the above.

But, of course, the desire or need to go gluten free doesn’t erase the cravings for baked goods, pancakes, breaded foods and the like — hence the onslaught of gluten-free flour blends and baking mixes that have flooded the market.

There are about as many different brands of gluten-free flour as there are reasons to go gluten free, but not all of them are worth your hard-earned cash. Some have less-than-optimal ingredients, some contain items that may work for some people and not others (one major brand we tried has milk powder fine for my family, but not anyone who’s cooking for someone with a dairy allergy), some just don’t work as well or impart a flavor you might not want. So how do you know which flour blend to buy?

As a recipe developer who works frequently on healthy recipes, I've come up with plenty of gluten-free dishes. And personally, my husband has an autoimmune disease, so he’s been gluten free for nearly three years. With all of that, I’ve tried many gluten-free flours, with mixed results (some are good for cookies but not so great for pancakes, others aren’t good for baking but work nicely as breading). So we created a more formal test, trying out seven popular brands of gluten-free flour in pancakes, shortbread and chicken cutlets (yep, I was very popular with my neighbors there for a while), to bring you the very best ones on the market.

I recorded a fun, mama-themed podcast with Danie at Catch This Mama a couple weeks ago and during the interview we agreed that lack of time is one of the biggest challenges we both face as parents. Anyway, whether you’re a busy parent, busy professional, busy student – heck, I know some people that are all three! – we can all agree that time feels tight more often than not, and at the end of the day a big elaborate meal just isn’t going to happen. By all means, let’s slow down and enjoy the process of making homemade pizzas on Friday night, fire up the grill for sizzling steaks on Saturday, and simmer a slow-cooked stew on Sunday. But Monday-Thursday? Just get that ish on the table!

I'm going to say something controversial, and with reckless abandon: Gravy is the best part of Thanksgiving dinner. Most years, I could take or leave the turkey. Green bean casserole just isn't my thing. And I'll happily pass on the cranberries. But a generous drizzle of smooth and creamy gravy all over everything on my plate? Yes, please. It ties the entire Thanksgiving feast together.

Unfortunately, unlike most other Thanksgiving staples, gravy is a gluten bomb (it's classically made with a roux, a combination of fat and flour that thickens the gravy into rich, pourable goodness). Nowadays, the odds are that someone in your family is either allergic to or avoiding gluten, whether it's your brother-in-law (like mine) or your mom (like Megan Mitchell's). What's a gravy-lover to do? Forgo the gravy? (Never!) Make two? (Who has time for that?) Lucky for all of us, Megan recently shared her recipe and tips for a delicious, gluten-free turkey gravy that will satisfy everyone in an upcoming live class on the Food Network Kitchen app.

Made with real turkey dripping, Megan's gravy combines turkey stock with a whole head of slow-roasted garlic and tons of herbs for maximum flavor. Her secret weapon is cornstarch: an easy gluten-free alternative to flour that — unlike tapioca starch, xanthan gum or rice flour — you probably already have in your pantry. Instead of making a roux as you'd do with flour, Megan combines equal parts cornstarch and water to create what's called a slurry. Dissolving the cornstarch in room-temperature water first helps prevent the cornstarch from forming clumps in the hot gravy. (And we can all agree that nobody likes lumpy gravy!) The result is a thick, rich and smooth gravy that no one will ever guess is gluten-free (and dairy-free!). Her recipe makes six to seven cups of gravy, perfect for a small family feast, or even a Thanksgiving meal plus leftovers for two (post-Turkey day poutine, anyone?).

To make this gluten-free pizza dough you will need only a handful of ingredients. Gluten free flour blend, flaxseed, olive oil, yeast, sugar, salt and water. Yes, this is a full on gluten free pizza dough made with yeast. You will love this gluten free pizza crust because not only it is easy to make, the crust is light and crispy.
